Theoretical Models
Theoretical Framework:
-
Model of Human Occupation (MOHO)
-
The MOHO focuses on the person using the lenses of volition, habituation, and performance capacity in relation to the environment (Kielhofner & Burke, 1980). This model can be applied to the matching process between service dogs and veteran handlers by evaluating each aspect of the person prior to matching them with a dog. Doing so will allow the values, routines, and capacity for an occupation to be considered when placing a dog in the home. This holistic approach to matching the dog with the person allows the handler to understand their needs and what they will gain from obtaining a service dog to enhance their occupational performance.

Ecology of Human Performance (EHP)
-
The EHP model focuses on the impact of the environment on occupational participation (Dunn et al., 1994).
-
The establish/restore intervention approach can be used by establishing new routines with the handler that include the care of the service dog.
-
The adapt/modify intervention approach can address the adaptations required in the environment to incorporate the service dog.
